Did I just win an award?

Screen Shot 2016-04-30 at 8.49.28 AMMy writing career began in high school. To prepare myself, I posed for a photo in my room, holding a fake Stratocaster, pointing at the camera with shades on. I got out a piece of paper and a Sharpie and drew the profile of a bald man with a large nose, then next to it, a large “R,” which began three separate words: “Rob’s Rock Review.” (See right for a less flashy photo from the period.)

This was the art for my music column at the Memorial Sentinel, my high school paper. And my first article was a glowing review of an inexcusably bad Roger Daltrey solo album. And it won an award. I’m not sure who gave it to me, or why. Oklahoma public schools? Regional? Was there a ribbon?

I’ve not won an award for anything since. Until this year — I think?

Last year I got to be on Gary Arndt’s first episode of his Global Travel Conspiracy podcast. And the episode won silver from NATJA, or the North American Travel Journalists Association.

I love their description for the podcast:

Here’s the podcast. But be warned: it does feature presidential pants and a blue clarinet.
